World of Warcraft offers 4 differenet types of mounts. The first you have to be a level 40, then level 60 for the second, and the last two are rare drops and epic flying mounts, so you'll need to be a 70 for the last two. Mounts are race specific, although other races are available if you are Exhalted with another races major city. For example, my Dwarf Hunter who's race rides Rams, wanted a Tiger. So to get it I had to become Exhalted with Darnassus, the Night Elf's Major City.

Before you can purchase a mount you must first buy the Riding Skill Level for that mount.

Level 40 Apprenticeship requires 90 gold (81g discount for Honored Reputation)

Level 60 Journeyman requires 600 gold (540g for Honored Reputation)

Level 70 Expert requires 800 gold (800g for Honored Reputation)

Level 70 Artisan requires 5000 gold (5000g for Honored Reputation)

Ground Mounts & Flying Mounts

Ground Mounts are the most popular, and most noticed by new players. Flying Mounts can only be used while in the Outlands, so new players don't see them. The level 40 ground mount will give you a 60% speed increase over walking, and the level 60 ground mount will have a 100% speed increase over walking.

Flying Mounts give a 60% speed increase, and the Epic Flying Mount will give a 280% speed increase.

Elekk (Exodar) - Ridable by Draenei, Dwarf, Gnome, Human, Night Elf

Rams (Ironforge) - Ridable by Draenei, Dwarf, Gnome, Human, Night Elf

Mechanostriders (Gnomeregan Exiles) - Ridable by Dwarf, Gnome

Horses (Stormwind) - Ridable by Dwarf, Gnome, Human, Night Elf

Sabre Cats (Darnassus) - Ridable by Dwarf, Gnome, Human, Night Elf

Gryphon (Alliance) - Ridable by All Alliance Players

Horde Mounts

Hawkstriders (Silvermoon City) - Ridable by Blood Elf, Orc, Troll, Undead

Wolves (Orgrimmar) - Ridable by Blood Elf, Orc, Tauren, Troll, Undead

Kodos (Thunder Bluff) - Ridable by Blood Elf, Orc, Tauren, Troll, Undead

Raptors (DarkSpear Tribe) - Ridable by Blood Elf, Orc, Tauren (PvP), Troll, Undead

Skeletal Horses (Undercity) - Ridable by Blood Elf, Orc, Troll, Undead

Wyvern (Horde) - Ridable by All Horde Players

Class Specific Mounts

Two classes are given a bonus of free mounts. Warlocks and Paladins. At level 40 they automatically learn the riding skill needed, and can learn a talent to sumon a mount for 1 gold. At level 60 they can complete an Epic Mount quest to get their next level mount.

PvP Mounts

Most Pvp Mounts can be purchased for 30 Warsong Gulch Marks of Honor, 30 Alterac Valley Marks of Honor, 30 Arathi Basin Marks of Honor at the Hall of Honor in Stormwind or the Hall of the Brave in Orgrimmar. These Mounts are:

Black War Steed

Black War Tiger

Black War Wolf

Red Skeletal Warhorse

Black War Kodo

Black War Raptor

The Stormpike Battle Charger is 50 Alterac Valley Marks of Honor

The Forstwolf Howler is 50 Alterac Valley Marks of Honor

Rare Drops

Ashes of Al'Ar: Drops from Kael'thas Sunstrider The Eye (25 man raid)

Deathcharger's Reins: Drops from Baron Rivendare, Stratholme

Fiery Warhorse's Reins: Drops from Attumen the Huntsman Karazhan (10 man raid)

Reins of the Raven Lord: Drops from Anzu Sethekk Halls (Heroic 5 man)

Swift Razzashi Raptor: Drops from Bloodlord Mandokir, Zul'Gurub

Swift Zulian Tiger: Drops from High Priest Thekal, Zul'Gurub

Amani War Bear: Drops from Zul'Aman's timed event you must kill the fourth animal boss within the time limit.
